During an initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reimagine” the metropolis, declaring “a different age” and an ambitious commencement to his administration.

An Unprecedented Figure

The young democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor of South Asian descent. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the public whose grasp the levers of change,” Mamdani remarked.

Defying counsel to temper hopes, the mayor asserted: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to change is that of modest goals. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Democratic Socialist Convictions

Mamdani explicitly affirmed his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not abandon my principles for concern of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to loud cheers.

The swearing-in was a two-part event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was formally sworn in on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over the status quo.

A Sweeping Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:

• Universal childcare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for nearly 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may prove difficult to fund. Mamdani has vowed to tax more heavily the city's top earners and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Dynamics

The new mayor also faces skepticism from some members of the Jewish community concerned about his past stances regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the optics of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “socialist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Governing

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering basic services: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth transit operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his administration's anti-crime efforts, citing historically low numbers of homicides and shootings in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his term starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Queens apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
