The Trump movement's most telling and defining occasions – not its most crucial, nor most brutal, nor most hazardous, nor most foolish, but potentially its most enlightening – occurred earlier this fall. In the course of several weeks, the American president commenced revealing all observers his designs for a gilded ballroom twice the size compared to the White House and then commenced independently demolishing the East Wing to build it.
He has done things ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of deaths due to his slashing to foreign assistance is 600,000 and rising, and this week an analysis forecast his fossil fuel policies would kill an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have dared – truly, no former commander would have contemplated – independently wrecking large sections of the executive mansion to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the direct cooperation of some of the richest Americans, nearly all of which maintain dealings with the government.

As disorienting as it is to observe the president seek to颠覆 the established notion about democracy and exchange it with its direct contrary, there is one large group among Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have watched throughout the years as politically conservative religious groups converted the Savior we learned about into the total contrary of our perception of his character. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of hostility who blesses exactly the harshness that he criticized in scripture; this transformation occurred at a slower pace, over decades instead of months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting in the same ways, a confusing personal impact for countless people.
A Harmful Christianity Takes Hold
Hence I shall explain the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and given that the fastest-growing cadre within America could have minimal awareness regarding him because they identify as skeptics or uncertain individuals or spiritual independents. I raise no objection with these various perspectives, nor with different religions; yet I maintain that contain precious wisdom of great price in the Christian story.
It is decidedly not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; instead, an infant arrives to parents without shelter in an automotive shelter, who are forced to hastily depart to a foreign land to avoid secret police. The infant develops in modest conditions, a working carpenter; his message is about love for other people, especially for the impoverished – not merely emotional affection, but practical compassion, demonstrated through nourishing and sheltering. Christ's response to aggression is to offer the other cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to educate the assailant; his crime policy indicates that whenever a person pilfers your outer garment you should give him your sweater as well.
The apparent and clear fact that Christ of the gospels advocates for a type of extreme compassion concentrated on the impoverished has perpetually caused the Christian faith somewhat of a provocative belief system: appealing to the general public, but due to its inherent radicalness needing to be restrained. In the 1950s it was contained by dilution – Protestant Christianity was so dominant that it essentially sanctified existing conditions.
A Struggle for the Highest Among Us
So I have been inspired to see the determined opposition against Trump develop during the previous year. It has served as significant comfort to help build the campaign that has demonstrated publicly through repeated demonstrations, and likely has encouraged electorate to show up in large quantities in interim political contests. We must have to persist with it, and in the same spirit, displaying national flags at every demonstration and calls to the finest aspects of American history.

The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, by relationship to the finest within national tradition, just as Christianity is most protected by reference to that which renders it unique and beautiful, specifically the model of Christ.
